Instrument Technologist

About You and this Role

Provides front line reliability and maintenance subject matter expertise to ensure sustained reliable equipment and process operation. Provides technical expertise which may be equipment-based or repair technique-based and impacts the reliability, availability, and maintainability of the system and/or equipment. Requires advanced skills and expertise in a range of processes, procedures, and systems, and/or specialized technical expertise within an analytical/scientific method or operational process to perform a broad range of complex work assignments. Applies leadership skills with technical knowledge in the application and procurement of instrument related equipment. May act as a working team lead, providing subject matter guidance and coordinating the work of others.

 

Responsibilities

  • Approach all work from a position of safety being the highest priority of any task, both personal safety and the safety of site personnel.
  • Monitors equipment performance, identifying and correcting negative trends. Escalates in a timely fashion to avoid EH&S or production impact.
  • Implements missing equipment monitoring capabilities to sustain reliability.
  • Does simple “5 Why” analysis to address equipment failures and provides experience on failures and repair techniques during formal root cause investigations.
  • Works directly with engineers and technician to implement solutions to resolve chronic failures.
  • Provides technical subject matter expertise on plant equipment issues (advanced repair, troubleshooting, replacement) and coaches crafts and operations personnel on appropriate repair practices.
  • Develops and reviews procedures and quality control plans with the necessary repair details. Ensures their consistent usage.
  • Serves as a technical resource for Daily and Turnaround Planners to job scope to ensure successful asset renewal and reliability improvement.
  • Develops and reviews maintenance procedures based on Most Effective Technology (MET).
  • Drives the use of work processes and operating disciplines at the plant, site, or technology level.
  • Performs and evaluates Condition-Based Monitoring (CBM) and Preventive Predictive Maintenance (PPM) results and recommends appropriate action.
  • Mentors other maintenance team members in core job responsibilities, common repairs, advanced repairs, and advanced diagnostics.

 

Requirements

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma/GED equivalent AND one of the following are required:

o Associate degree or higher in a related field.

o 3 or more years of relevant military experience.

o 5 or more years in maintaining instrumentation equipment such as flow/pressure/temperature instruments, safety instrumented systems, sensors and detection systems, etc.

  • Available for overtime, call-ins, plant turnarounds, is an expectation of the job.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license.
  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

 

Preferred Skills

  • 10 or more years of instrumentation and instrument equipment experience in a chemical/refinery plant and/or industrial repair shop.
  • Good computer and communication skills.
  • Have strong interpersonal, facilitative, and organizational skills in order to frequently communicate with leaders, operations teams, maintenance teams, contractors, and/or vendors.
  • Demonstrates excellent decision-making skills and the ability to prioritize appropriately.
  • Effectively manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Have strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong reading comprehension and listening skills.
  • Strong multi-tasking, problem solving and time management skills.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision within an empowered team environment.
  • Strong work ethic and safety focused.

  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Lift, push, and pull.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, and lifting.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Work at heights, climb stairs and ladders.
  • Work in tight and closed in spaces.
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment, including but not limited to respirator, earplugs, goggles, hardhat, and steel-toed shoes.
  • This role does involve elevated work greater than or equal to four feet above the ground.
  • Ability to work comfortably and safely at elevated heights. Candidates must be familiar with, or willing to undergo training in, the proper usage and maintenance of safety equipment to ensure safe movement and operations at heights.
