Engineer Intern/Co-Op

JOB NAME:              Engineer Intern/Co-Op





The Engineering Intern/Co-Op will support the Engineering Department by working on engineering projects involving components for nuclear power plants and the U.S. Navy.  Under the supervision of the Engineering Manager, the Engineering Intern/Co-Op is responsible for the following duties:


  • Assist in preparation of design analysis of components for nuclear power plants and the U.S. Navy
  • Assist in preparation of equipment qualification test procedures.
  • Assist in the design of equipment qualification testing.
  • Support the assembly and testing of a variety of pressure relief devices.
  • US Citizenship required due to US Navy contractual requirements.




  • Minimum 2 years of undergraduate study in an Engineering or technical area.
  • Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office Suite.  MS ACCESS programming is a plus.
  • Oral and written communications, as well as interpersonal skills.
  • CAD (SolidWorks, Inventory, AutoCAD, etc.) background desirable. 


The work assigned to Interns or Co-Op students is always made up of assignments that are needed for the business. We do not create “make work” assignments. As a result, the work that is assigned, just as in the real world includes a mix that ranges from challenging and exciting to the mundane but necessary. This does, however, allow us though to take into consideration requests from students to work in areas that they have a particular interest or expertise if we have requirements in that area.  


  • Perform program verifications of updated engineering calculation software.  Programs such as reaction force for liquid (LIQREACT.exe), gas (GASFD.exe), and steam (THRUST04.exe); thread analysis, noise calculation, plate stress analysis from Roark equations, flange analysis in accordance with ASME requirements, pro-rate spring selection, capacity flow calculation, etc.
  • Create engineering materials library for the different ASME Code year and Addenda to cut down research and lead time on creating design reports and analyses.  Library would consist of mechanical strengths at different temperature ratings.
  • Create standard templates for design reports and seismic analysis.  This includes checking engineering formulas, equations, and embedded fields in the report for accuracy and correctness. 
  • Support SPA in upgrading our test facility in preparation of having our test facility certified with National Board. This would involve CAD layout of facility set up, research in sensors and measuring equipment.
  • Document the Engineering Rotation Program (scope for engineer to spend time in SPA for assembly and test of valves, QA to understand quality and traceability of material requirements, front end (both nuclear and navy – quotation and processing for orders), ETS to understand BOM and flow of material control, exchange program to another facility, etc.
  • Support design and testing required to expand product offerings, specifically for the OMNI pressure relief valve design.
  • Support reorganization and digital transformation of engineering data.
