Packaging Engineer


Position Description

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Packaging Engineer to join our Packaging team in developing world-class designs for use in high volume automation equipment. You will play a key role on the team and will be the one who brings it all together to drive technical execution of packaging projects across several Vehicle and Energy Product platforms. This is a very unique opportunity to engage with all facets of Tesla development from technology and design through component delivery and final manufacturing. The successful candidate must have the ability to work quickly and efficiently with a high level of precision, have strong interpersonal and communication skills, be detail oriented, and not afraid to re-define tradition.

 

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end engineered packaging projects for Tesla Vehicle and Energy platforms
  • Interface with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, New Product Introduction, and Operations partners to gather and develop packaging requirements
  • Partner with Supply Chain and Logistics to drive projects to enable the most efficient delivery of parts possible without sacrificing part quality or manufacturability
  • Provide design direction and development plans of protective packaging containers, dunnage and unique shipping racks – domestic and international
  • Monitor KPI’s and work with Packaging Design Engineers to develop world-class packaging standards and continue to improve upon them
  • Drive expendable to returnable projects and participate in sustainability initiatives
  • Manage project budgets, risks, and change management
  • Assist in vendor selection and vendor management

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Manufacturing, Engineering, Packaging or equivalent work experience with evidence of exceptional ability
  • Working knowledge of CAD, and technical drawings, including datum structure, GD&T and tolerance stack up analysis
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes including machining, welding, injection molding etc.
  • Strong knowledge in a large variety of materials (aluminum, steel, composites, foam, etc.)
  • Experience with designing to standards such as ASTM, Mil-Spec, etc.
  • Strong understanding of packaging testing and validation
  • Capable of managing multiple priorities at once without sacrificing quality of results
  • Proficient at risk management and communication
  • Team player with strong process and continuous improvement mindset
